He's no dimwit
After reading a review-slash-spoiler of the movie two hours before actually watching the movie last night, I had this sinking feeling this movie was heading in the direction of Tom Cruise's War of The Worlds-logic. Could Keanu save the day..for me and Medulla?
Turns out reviews can sometimes be wrong. And in Keanu's case, biased. Despite being a remake of the original 1951 black-and-white film of the same name, The Day The Earth Stood Still is thoroughly enjoyable even if the premise of the show is somewhat environmentally cliche - planet Earth in danger of dying..due to abuse from humans..in order to save planet Earth, need to get rid of humans. Plus Keanu makes such a believable alien (yes, I do admit his dimwit reputation does affect his box-office ratings but that's something I'm willing to overlook *hehehe*) that I can't imagine any other actor in the role as Klaatu, although he does show his age in this movie (again, who cares!?!)
In the meantime, I'll be dreaming of Keanu tonight *DROOL*

Shaken but definitely not stirred
After watching trailers for the latest Bond movie, naturally I was on a high. After all, James Bond is like an international institution - charming, sexy, smart yet dangerous. Not forgetting those wonderful gadgets and cars that have been featured.And let's not forget all those girls who has succumbed to his charms *sigh* heck, with the gorgeous Daniel Craig on tow, I definitely wouldn't mind!
Unfortunately, that high didn't last long. Without going into too much details, let's just say I was left feeling stumped and disappointed when the movie ended. [spoiler alert!] Where was Q? Where were the gadgets? How did Bond not end up getting the girl? Who tried to **** M? Whatever happened to the first baddie after he disappeared? Unless I was sleeping halfway throughout the movie, everything seemed to going at top speed without any breathe/stop/pause button for us moviegoers to digest.
In the meantime, here's something for all you Daniel Craig fans out there to digest on.

Amour
Each time I hear this song, I turn to *ahem* mush.
One of my favourite scenes in The Lake House, the dancing-in-the-backyard scene between my beloved and Sandra Bullock's characters while this song was playing. I loved these two in Speed and I loved them even more in here. And if Sandra hadn't gotten married to that biker dude, I'd have rooted for them in real-life!

Still waiting...
Despite all the criticisms and gossip, from his acting to his sexuality, Keanu Reeves will always be my ultimate guilty pleasure, and at 44, the man still makes me go weak in the knees and this ol' heart skip a beat....SIGH!
Now, if only he'd get back to me..I've lost count on the number of phone messages, text meesages, e-mails and letters I've sent to him!

Strangers in the night
When Stephen King wrote "That's why I can't imagine that anything in X-Files will match Liv Tyler's exchange with one of the masked home invaders in one particularly terrifying scene of The Strangers.
..I knew I had to check this one out.
Based on true events, a couple find themselves menaced by a trio of masked psychos in the middle of the night and in the middle of nowhere. There were so many memorable scenes to choose from, mostly which involved a whole lot of ear and eye-closing as well as hiding behind bags, but one that stuck out was when Liv Tyler's character tried to hide underneath the bed, only to discover she can't fit there!!! (Note to all: check your beds. If you can't fit underneath it, get a new one. Or if junk is stored, get rid of them!)
If you like a good scare, which certainly did it for me, then this is a must-see (sorry mozart and Miss J, this one is definitely off-limits to the both of you) - currently showing at Q-lap Mall @ 11.20pm.
But the moral of the story: never buy or stay at a house where there are no nearby neighbours.
Oh, and if someone knocks in the middle of the night, let it be.

Showdown
Call me insane but I may be the only one who is not buying into the "Heath Ledger was brilliant as the Joker" hype. There's no denying his portrayal of the iconic Joker was by far creepy, visceral and convincing (sorry Jack Nicholson but your Joker was leaning more towards cheekiness) upstaged everyone including our hero, Batman. But for his death, would everyone be showering him with compliments had he still been alive? And all this talk of a post-humous Oscar...what a load of phish-phosh I say.
Having said all that, The Dark Knight was miles better than the mind-boggling Hancock, though slightly convulated that at times I felt Christopher Nolan (the director) was suffocating us the viewers with the various subplots (hence the two and a half hours duration). And, and..who would've thought Christian Bale would become the best unlikely superhero of this decade..can't wait for his portrayal as the infamous John Connor (Terminator 4)!

Disappointed
Though the odds of an upset was slim to none, after all most of the top seed women were sent packing back home by the first week, when you're up against the Williams sisters the opponent had better be darned lucky on that day, or on par with either Venus or the bulkier-looking Serena (is it me but doesn't anyone find Serena's bodyframe resembling the Hulk?!?). Save for the brief interruption by Mother Nature, it was game, set and win for Serena even though Zhang Jie did give Serena some food for thought along the way. So another Venus versus Serena final this weekend...yaaawwwwnnnn..I'd rather watch Nadal and Federer battle it out again.

Spooked
I remember watching Shutter for the first time with Medulla. Along with the creepy studio scene and a certain u-know-what coming out from the sink, the last ten minutes of the film featuring that infamous plot-twist certainly sent chills down my spine. At the same time Shutter set a high standard (for me, anyway) where scary movies are concerned. So when Medulla and I decided to check out the English/American remake of the same movie, both our expectations were on a high after seeing what seemed like a promising trailer.
Note: Spoiler alert!! Do not read on if you haven't seen this movie/intend to catch this movie.
Man, was that one scary shit of a movie!
And I was so glad Medulla was there to remind me of the scary scenes. I know what you're thinking here...if she has already seen the original movie, then surely she'd remember. Well that was two years ago. Besides our brain sometimes tend to remember certain scenes/parts, like the first time we meet the 'girl' in the middle of almost nowhere, so one could hardly blame me for being a wee bit slow in recalling those scenes which would either make you jump from your seat or close your eyes/ears..or in my case, hide behind my bag!
My only gripe about the movie..besides the absence of any translation for the Japanese conversations, the absence of THAT infamous studio scene and the walking upside-down scene..which both Medulla and I were guessing had something to do with the Americans not understanding the psychological suspense of these particular scenes. Shame..otherwise the movie still kicked some ass.

Goosebumps and snores
Need a good scare? Then check out The Orphanage. Produced by the same bloke who gave us the weirdly brilliant (though Medulla thinks otherwise) Pan's Labyrinth, El Orfanato is more of a suspense/thriller/supernatural which is not for the faint-hearted..mozart and Miss J, take note..you have been warned. Kudos to the film distributors who took the unconventional route of screening this gem. After all the endless Korean/Chinese/Thai 'ghostly' movies that have graced our cinemas for the past couple of years, this is a nice (and hopefully promising?) welcome for all those supernatural/thriller/suspense film buffs out there. Infact, I was quite impressed with the little crowd that turned up to catch the film with most of us screaming/closing their eyes and/or ears/jumping from their seats during the 'scary' scenes, except of course for this one particular person who must've gotten lost in translation and found him/herself snoring away halfway through the film!
..and the remake of the brilliant yet scary-as-h**l Shutter even looks promising, any volunteers?

A lesson in history
The trailer looked promising what with the mammoths, sabre-tooth tiger and the premise itself - being 10000 BC...way before kingdoms, territories and even countries were established, Fleming discovered penicillin, man 'flew' to the moon and huge shoulder pads became a fad.
So what appeared to be something to look for forward to following the rather dismal showings of mediocre movies at the cinemas quickly turned out to be a dud. It was like watching the brilliant Mel Gibson-directed Apocalypto with the same plotline except on a more grand scale minus the foreign language (who knew English was already around 10 000 BC years ago...) and violence.
I smell lack of originality here...no?

Image courtesy of Jeff Vespa/WireImageNihilism..greed..religion..a French icon..teenage pregnancy..a serial killer with the oddest haircut in cinematic history..a rogue spy seeking revenge..who would've thought these themes would reign supreme in this year's Academy Awards aka the Oscars? While I have yet to watch a big chunk of the nominated movies, though I truly recommend No Country For Old Men not just for the sake of watching Javier Bardem's mophead hairdo, there was no big sweep a la Titanic and Lord of The Rings.
Having said all that, the Oscars wouldn't be the Oscars without the glamour and glitz of the celebrities. Designers, hair stylists, makeup artists, manicurists, jewellers, personal stylists all depend on this one particular night to showcase their gowns, shoes, handbags, jewellery, hairstyles and all sorts of creation...can you imagine the heartbreak and cries of frustration/losses if the writers' strike couldn't be resolved in time for today?
After watching repeats of E!'s Live from the Red Carpet as well as checking out the usual websites, I must say it was generally disappointing. The choices were boring and safe - again. Whatever happened to all those female celebrities who'd been attending all these fashion shows prior to the Oscars?!? Where were the gorgeous Herve Leger dresses which were adorned by the likes of Mandy Moore, Joss Stone etc? At times like these, another Bjork swan-dress or even Cher's see-through whatchamacallit would've added some humour to the already lacklustre show...though Jennifer Hudson's nightmare of a dress did come close to being THAT dress!
Anyway..I think these three stood out for me amongst the sea of forgettable gowns..

Another one bites the dust
Heath Ledger : 1979 - 2008What is it about celebrities and their fondness for drugs, booze, sex and all things taboo? Are they so bored with their day jobs (cos mine doesn't pay me million-dollar paychecks as opposed to, oh say, Reese Witherspoon just to play a character over a two-month period!?!), or depressed/mentally unstable that resorting to drugs would somehow help them overcome their boredom/depression?
This morning's shocking news about Heath Ledger's death was - simply shocking. As with the late River Phoenix, I didn't expect Heath Ledger to go down the way he did. Yes, he seemed like a 'bad boy' - so much so like his character Patrick Verona in my all-time favourite Heath Ledger flick 10 Things I Hate About You - but when he hooked up with Michelle Williams (and later had a daughter) and received an Oscar nomination for that you-know-what movie, all thoughts of him being a 'bad boy' disappeared. I guess that's the advantage of being an actor - you can still 'act' in real life.
The next few days will be filled with all sorts of reports, anaylses, thoughts about the incident. Suicide..drug overdose..depression..you name it. And while all this is going on, the world will temporarily forget about the far more deserving hundreds of innocent losses in Kenya, the Gaza Strip, Iraq ...

Finally here
With its actual plot shrouded in mystery and its trailers not giving much away, the much-anticipated movie Cloverfield has finally arrived. Not to worry folks, I won't give anything away except that it's a cleverly-written thriller (think Godzilla meets The Blair Witch Project with hints of War of The Worlds, Independence Day just to name a few) offering no definitive ending mainly 'cos it is largely based on the perspective of the 'victims' .. you'll know what I mean once you've seen it...plus there's plenty of suspense/thriller/chilling scenes, enough to keep you sitting at the edge of your seats.
A word of warning however..and I feel I owe it to everyone so you won't come buzzing me on messenger complaining about the movie..if you weren't a fan of the The Blair Witch fuzzy camera moves, you might wanna sit this one out. Let's just say I'm still nursing a headache..
