Olympics Galore

The fastest man...in the water!!

If I have bored anyone with my recent Olympics' posts, be prepared *muahahahahahahahahahhaaha* Come on now, with Michael Phelps setting new records and winning all eight gold medals as per his target...Federer getting his ass kicked (again)... Jamaica sweeping the medals in both the men's and women's 100m races, officially killing all hopes of the Americans in their bid to maintain their dominance over the track and at the same time, catching up with Chinese in the medals standing...Federer finally winning gold tho in an unfamiliar territory aka men's double tennis...a 41-year old proving that age isn't a barrier...surely any one of these would've gotten you sitting at the edge of your seat/s, shouting and screaming as if these people can even hear you?? Watching Michael Phelps earlier yesterday morning in his bid to win his 8th gold medal was simply riveting and nerve wrecking. Those last 30 seconds or so when Jason Lezak had 50 metres to go with Eamonn Sullivan from Australia matching him arm to arm..the thought of Phelps possibly losing that 8th and final gold by a hundreth of a second or two...'til Lezak finally touched the wall ahead of Australia, and everything was right in Michael Phelps' world. It would've been cool to be there at the Water Cube, to witness sporting history in the making as well as to check out the lovely bods of the swimmers *yummm*, but that's a different story altogether...

..But in the meantime, let's join in the celebration of these talented people who have provided us with plenty of entertainment over the past 10 days or so, with more hopefully to come..

The fastest man...on land!

Did you know...?

Ever wondered why divers immediately head to the showers, right after coming out of the pool?

Here's why: Divers shower in between each dive to keep their muscles warm after getting out of the pool. The temperature of the pool water and the air are usually different (the pool is usually around 80 degrees, with the air temperature between 68 and 72 degrees). This difference can cause muscle tightness. To combat this, divers warm up in either the showers or a hot tub.

Mystery solved.

OUCH!?!

I find it both fascinating and amusing how grown men and women spend most of their time lifting these things everyone calls "weights", just for what? To be called the strongest man/woman in the world. I've been watching the Olympics since it started and to watch these men and women dressed in these ridiculously tight and funny outfits, competing against each other to see who can lift the most weights...how funny! And let's not forget the background support in the form of their coaches/mentors "giving" their utmost support...where sometimes it works..and sometimes it backfires. But there was always one thing that bore in my mind, reminding me how dangerous it can be if something should go wrong.

And this confirmed my belief. *WARNING: PROCEED WITH CAUTION.*

"
This is the moment Hungarian weightlifter Janos Baranyai's first Olympics ended in agony when he dislocated his right elbow in the ugliest moment yet of the Olympic weightlifting competition.

Baranyai was trying to snatch 148kg in his third lift in the men's 77kg division, when his elbow popped out of its socket.

No longer able to support the weight of the barbell, his right forearm bent backward. The 24-year-old Hungarian fell to the floor in shock, shaking and crying out in pain.

Hungary's coaching staff and competition officials rushed to Baranyai's aid as he lay trembling on the floor, his arm limp and twisted out of position."

This is no laughing matter folks, even seeing the photos give me goosebumps!

One World One Dream

It was billed as THE event of the year and man, did the host (China) go all out! The fireworks! The performances! The colourful costumes! The amazing Bird's Nest Stadium! My favourite being Li Ning walking round the top of the stadium, whilst attached on wires, to light the main torch...how cool was that!!

If the opening was this good, there's no doubt the Chinese will also spare no expenses in churning out a spectacular closing ceremony. After all they spent seven - yes, you heard me right there..S-E-V-E-N - years preparing for all this. Yikesss! Looks like the Brits will have a hard time trying to top this.

On a more serious note, did anyone catch what the commentators said about our country being absent from the list of participants? The only words I caught were "late" and "admission"...anyone?

A couple more hours to go before the 2008 Olympics officially begins..

Happy Sunday

Sundays are usually meant for lie-ins, lazing around, brunches, catching up on tv/sports and family time. Sundays are also reserved for weddings, thanksgiving functions, office ECAs (usually aerobics, walkathons...) and sports activities - most of which I try to avoid by all means unless necessary. And today so happens to be one of those Sundays..

Apologies for the lack of quality but with the crowds rushing to catch a glimpse of the newlyweds and the lack of common sense of the driver in not moving the car back , this was the best I could take.

Congratulations Zubaidah & Faren

Also congratulations to my fellow Treasure Hunters - Mr & Mrs M, mozart, K Dot A, Als & Tam and Medulla - on their success in today's annual NBT Treasure Hunt. Well done peeps!!

On a serious note...could this year finally be Nadal's year of glory...? Come on Federer, don't let me down...

Disappointed

Though the odds of an upset was slim to none, after all most of the top seed women were sent packing back home by the first week, when you're up against the Williams sisters the opponent had better be darned lucky on that day, or on par with either Venus or the bulkier-looking Serena (is it me but doesn't anyone find Serena's bodyframe resembling the Hulk?!?). Save for the brief interruption by Mother Nature, it was game, set and win for Serena even though Zhang Jie did give Serena some food for thought along the way. So another Venus versus Serena final this weekend...yaaawwwwnnnn..I'd rather watch Nadal and Federer battle it out again.

All but over?

Summer is almost upon us peeps! Well technically it doesn't really apply to our part of the world seeing how it's almost always "summer" all throughout the year...but it''s usually around this time of the year that exams are taking place before students go off for their holiday, whether it be 3 months or 2 weeks or maybe even 5 days, sporting events such as Euro 2008, French Masters, Wimbledon and tonight's UEFA final match (go ManYOOOOOOO!!) take place, and the current 2007-2008 tv season coming to an end, in the States that is, with American Idol final being the highlight amongst all...although I beg to differ particularly after watching - and crying myself silly! - the season finale of House and probably the second best episode after "Three Stories"!

So when Paula made that kiss-of-death comment about David Cook's second song being "not the winning song", I just knew David C didn't stand a chance. That coupled with Simon's singing praises for David Archiewatsisface, it's pretty obvious the votes will land in David Archuleta's favour tomorrow morning. Not that I think Archie-boy isn't talented save for my constant reminder that he's the 2.0 version of Gareth Gates, his smarmy "awww gosh, thank you everyone" expression is just too fake and superficial for my liking. It's times like these that I wish we too could have our say, don't you think so? That being said, if the people over at Idol and Fox were to consider allowing us to vote, we'd probably be seeing Chikezie or Kristy Lee Cook in the finals - God forbid!

Stunned

This year's Australian Open has definitely been a funny trail of uncertainty and surprises..save for the Women's Final (as much as I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Ana Ivanovic to take the title, odds are Maria 'Shriek'-apova will come out trumps..but hey, Henin and Serena were the two odds-on favourites to be in the final..and look where they are right now...), come Monday morning, the sports headlines would be churning out analyses about the Men's Finals of this year's Australian Open with one common denominator - how either, or both (depending on the quality of Sunday's game) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Novok Djokovic will represent the new era of challenges to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Today was perhaps the first time I've seen Federer look dejected (well almost, in contrast to Nadal who completely lost all of his usual ruthlessness in yesterday's game with Tsonga), under pressure and outclassed..BUT despite all that, Federer was still gracious about his loss and that is why I believe all the Tsongas and Djokovics of this world will not come close to dethroning Federer..

..so in the meantime, I'm off to continue mourning Federer and Nadal's defeats... *bwwaaaahhh*

Wake-up call ?

It was inevitable..in the end he had to go..such that his sacking even made it as "Breaking News" over CNN - a spot usually reserved for events that affect our lives. So what exactly went wrong? There's no easy answer to this but in a way, Steve Maclaren (that's the former England coach to you non-football fans out there) was just the icing on a melting cake. The lack of (international football) experience coupled with the lacklustre English squad who, despite all the hype, are nothing but a bunch of narcissistic, self-centred, materialistic fellas lacking in finesse and quality...although I must give some credit to Beckham for his efforts in riling up some enthusiasm and belief. The English are proud of their football heritage..after all, the English Premier League is known for being the top league when compared to the other football leagues in the world...yet,at most times, they're all style with little substance, or at its worst, none at all.

So,echoing Eva Peron, don't cry for them. They have no-one but themselves to blame. The recent events should serve as a reality-check to those concerned that England is no longer a football super-power. Having said that, I doubt anyone will even want to acknowledge this..

Ecstatic

It's late I know but I have just spent the past 90 minutes trying to calm my nerves (which, among others, involved a lot of
channel surfing and visits to the loo!)waiting to find out who would win the Brazilian Grand Prix..and eventually the world champion for 2007.

And it was worth the wait and nerves. There was so much hype surrounding Hamilton and his almost first-time title as rookie world champion that today was his race to lose (ignoring the possibility that perhaps, just perhaps Alonso or Raikkonen migh ruin that dream)...and lost he did the second he ran wide in the first few corners , lost his position and never recovered from that. Even whiny Alonso didn't pose that much of a threat to the two scarlett Ferraris though I kept hoping his car would stall halfway - still can't find myself 'liking' Alonso.

There's a saying "Nothing is impossible" and tonight's race/win proves just that.

..and maybe a l'il bit of luck too *wink* *wink*

Shame on you

With the recent barage of news featuring people of all walks of life ranging from politicians to sportsmen to bloggers, some of whom have made the headlines for the wrong reasons, I thought I'd start our blog's own Hall of Shame..

1. Britney
I know I'm not alone in saying this but enough already! Over the past two years, she has transformed herself into the ultimate poster child for sex kitten-turned-trailer trash..and from the looks of it, her journey to the doldrums appear imminent. I never thought I'd say this but Britney makes Paris, Nicole and Lindsay look like angels *SHOCK*

2. Marion Jones
If she thought her teary-eyed press conference would garner some sympathy for her troubles, the fact of the matter is that she l**d.

3. Beyonce
Your disrespect for a particular country has shown your lack of class.

4. Lewis Hamilton & Fernando Alonso
I'd always known Alonso's a sore loser (Schumacher would've kept his mouth shut) but someone should burst Hamilton's ever-growing ego 'cause it's beginning to turn people off.

The wisdom of Mourinho

Why I will miss the Not So Special One..

"It is omelettes and eggs. No eggs - no omelettes! It depends on the quality of the eggs. In the supermarket you have class one, two or class three eggs and some are more expensive than others and some give you better omelettes. So when the class one eggs are in Waitrose and you cannot go there, then you have a problem." Shorn of the likes of injury victims Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack, Ricardo Carvalho and Didier Drogba, Mourinho cooked up a surreal analogy ahead of Tuesday's fateful draw with Rosenberg.

"In the second half it was whistle and whistle, fault and fault, cheat and cheat. I know the referee did not walk to the dressing rooms alone at half-time." Mourinho, claiming Alex Ferguson had influenced referee Neale Barry at halftime during a League Cup semi-final against Manchester United in January 2005. He was fined for improper conduct.

...and my personal favourite..

"Please don't call me arrogant, but I'm European champion and I think I'm a special one." Mourinho introduces himself to the English press after arriving from Porto in June 2004.

Ode to the Special One

The Special One has now become the Not-So Special One. I have to admit I was taken aback upon hearing the news this morning seeing how all this talk about the NsSO quitting Chelsea FC has been going on since last season, which of course never materialised til today!

And what perfect timing too to leave the club...just when the big match crunch against Man Yoo happens to take place this weekend..there I was looking forward to his endless whinings, ramblings, excuses and let's not forget that big ego - hence the "The Special One" monicker. Oh Mourinho, how I'll miss that huge ego of yours (always the butt of my jokes amongst my footie-loving buddies)....

The Sharapova effect

I blame this on Sharapova but there isn't one game in the current US Open where you won't find anyone grunting or screeching or shrieking in all sorts of tones and decibels! Heck even the lads are taking up this annoying habit..I'm just glad I don't have to listen to Sharapova for the remainder of this tournament. Not trying to be mean here but how her opponents can actually focus or concentrate on their games is certainly worth asking one day.

On a more shallow note, I wonder how many other sequinned outfits she had in store prior to her surprise defeat...

p/s: Mum just reminded me about Serena...the other culprit of the Sharapova shrieking effect..how could I forget?

September's list

Things to look forward to this month:

1) Ramadhan
There's just something i can't quite describe about this special month..no, it's got nothing to do with the gerais!

2) Rugby World Cup 2007
France, big burly men in almost-supertight rugby gear knocking each other out senseless or grabbing each other's b**ls (no pun intended), the All Blacks. I know who I'll be rooting for..and he goes by the #10

3) The return of fall TV
Heroes. House. Brothers & Sisters.Grey's Anatomy. CSI. How I Met Your Mother. Ugly Betty. Desperate Housewives...the countdown has begun *tick tock* *tock tock*

to be continued...

United trumps again

Just thought I'd share my joy with everyone before the mood disappears.

Ok maybe I'm not the world's greatest Man Yoo fan but I'll take just about any team that can beat the crap outta Chelsea, which they did a few minutes ago! Just looking at Mr Sourface aka Mourinho when the two Chelsea players missed their penalties was enough to make my day *muahahahahahaha*

So maybe tonight's game might be a fluke or not a true indicator as to who'll come up tops in the upcoming Premier League season (I'm guessing Sourface will say something to this effect..hah!)..and maybe I wasn't really tuned in 100% but my money's on Man Yoo to pull another double on Chelsea..or maybe a hat trick?

Watch this space..
