If you feel like taking a breather from listening to Beyonce telling her fella to go "to the left, to the left" or Gwen Stefani goin on about her "sweet escape", then check out Amy Winehouse. Famous for her drunken antics back in Britain (heck she even looked half drunk when performing recently in a club in NYC!) and her gi-normous tatoos of naked women on both her arms, this girl is definitely a breath of fresh air for me. She kinda reminds me of this American comedienne/actress..Sarah Silverman..though Amy looks more of a tart-up version of this Sarah person!
I must admit that I've never heard of her music prior to getting hold of "Back to Black" ... probably because I was too reliant on Capital Radio to provide me with the latest music, knowing full well that artists like Amy Winehouse wouldn't get that much exposure (think: commercial!) on radio stations such as Capital. But as usual curiosity got the better of me late last year and I managed to get hold of couple of her songs..the origins which shall remain a secret (*wink* *wink*) And guess what?? The minute or rather second I heard her sing "They tried to make me go to rehab/But I said no,no,no" I was hooked BIG time (and I'm not literally referring to her voice which comes across between that of Dinah Washington and Billie Holiday!)
Amongst the tunes which stand out for me...besides 'Rehab' (which has been described as an autobiography of her drinking problems)..'Love Is A Losing Game' (my favourite lines being 'love is a fate resigned/memories mar my mind'..it can't get any better than that)...'Wake Up Alone' and, AND! 'Addicted' which apparently has been left out from the US version of her album due to references to weed (whatever!) but nevertheless included in the UK version.
Now as to whether her music will ever be embraced by our local stations is something which I won't hold my breath for...although I did catch Channel V showing her video for 'Rehab' since last week. But in any case I just thought I'd share this with you..and maybe perhaps convince you to give this brash yet talented lass from Britain a chance.
Medulla..if you're interested, you know where to find me and the cd..
