Equality

Whatever happened to Liberté, Egalité and Fraternité?

Does a woman who submits herself to her husband goes against the principle of equality among sexes? Does it matter that the woman in question is a Muslim and wears a burqa? Is wearing a burqa incompatible with the essential values of French community particularly equality of the sexes that an application for citizenship was rejected on such basis? Would the same courts come to the same conclusion if, say the applicant was wearing a Jewish cap? Or women whose partners beat them up?

Or is this notion of "Liberty, Equality and Fraternity", whilst in theory serves as a reminder of our (human) rights, realistically blurring the boundaries as to the extent one can or must ascribe to (a set of values)..

Have a good weekend!
