Theoretically it should be called "What I'm listening to in my car" seeing that my iPod has been sitting oh-so-comfortably in my handbag for the past couple of weeks, probably waiting for it to be recharged and updated...but then it's probably cooler to say something along the lines of what's currently playing in my iPod, dontchathink?
So who is currently in my iPod's Top Rated playlist, you ask?
Charlotte Gainsbourg's 5:55.
Charlotte Gainsbourg is the daughter/offspring of uber cool French couple Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin (one of the rare few who actually has a bag named after her aka The Birkin from Hermes..how cool is THAT??).
5:55 is created in collaboration with Pulp's former honcho Jarvis Cocker, the Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon and French duo Air, and produced by the same guy whose work credits include Air, Radiohead, Travis and Beck...so you can expect this album to be the epitome of French cool which I'm happy to say IT IS, even tho it took me 4 months to actually listen to it in its entirety! Papa and Mama Gainsbourg-Birkin should be proud.
Standout tracks for me include The Songs That We Sing (which caught my interest when I first saw the video in Channel V), AF607105 (I can't imagine this being played as inflight music though it would be a great hoot if they did) and The Operation which, despite Charlotte going on about her love going under the knife, is really about comparing heart surgery to a relationship. Hardly surprising seeing that these songs were written by Jarvis Cocker! And the Air influence is unmistakably evident here that you might be forgiven for thinking this is another Air album.
Whilst this album might not catch the interest of our local radiostations (I'd like to retract my earlier statement about how the radiostations back home wouldn't give Amy Winehouse the time or day cos I actually caught Kristal playing You Know I'm No Good a couple of days ago...whooops! hehehe) it's more of a chill-out album which won't give you headaches like Linkin Park or Good Charlotte.
Check out YouTube and Last.fm for a taste of 5:55 and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
