I may not be well-versed in this particular issue but I'm pretty sure all this hoo-ha of "menjaga (saiz) badan" has been around for yonks now...but my theory is that people just choose to ignore this problem probably saying something along the lines of "It's not my problem IF it doesn't affect me."
Madrid led the way last year by banning models with a BMI (body mass index) of less than 18 (s**t, mine's probably double (or even more) that amount!?!) following the death of a 22-year-old in a fashion show in Uruguay.Accordingly the model died of a heart attack moments after stepping off the catwalk - a result of having eaten nothing but green leaves, washed down with Diet Coke, for three months!!!
Here's a bit of some info: a BMI of 18.5 or below is classified as underweight by the WHO. Therefore a model - height 5'9''- would have to weigh a minimum of 8st 12lb to be classified as "healthy". However, at present the average 5'9" model weighs a mere 7st 12lb ... which works out roughly to a BMI of only 16.
Crikey!!!
Some critics have argued that there ought to be legislation protecting the health of models...but then what good will that do? There are girls out there who are naturally skinny (and can probably gulf down 2 hamburgers in one go!) and then there are those who choose to be skinny. Everywhere I go, I see girls who look like they haven't eaten for days or weeks. Should we make it a crime for these girls/women who choose to be skinny or ultra-skinny? If so, are we going to force them to eat as punishment? Is the law going to punish fashion designers or modelling agencies too? Perhaps it's not as easy as it seems eh...
What do I think? As much as I envy people like Reese Witherspoon, Kate Moss et al (friends included too!) and as frustrating as it gets when clothes that I like either don't fit cos of my size OR don't look good on me (again cos of my size), I don't have the urge to starve myself with celery or green leaves and Diet Coke (that stuff doesn't work anyway!)
As the saying goes life is precious, so why waste it all away?
Plus not all skinny people look happy or have a happy life..how can they when they're too engrossed with weighing themselves in the first place???
p/s: Get a load of Posh's legs...any more thinner they'll probably look like flagpoles!

The value of beauty... or rather cosmetic appearance tends to be overemphasised upon these days.
But beauty as you rightly pointed out, doesn't necessarily equate to nor guarantee joy, inner peace or good health and wellbeing...
Pity some of us women don't know how to love (and live with) ourselves better...
