Idol gives back

So the 'theme' for this week's Idol was somewhat cheesily called "Idol Gives Back" where these bigshot corporates make some supposed generous donations to Africa and America itself..all in the name of charity.

Maybe it's just me but what is it with celebrities and Africa? Why not..say Cambodia? or the refugees in Pakistan? What is so special about Africa that has got people from Sir Bob Geldof to Angelina Jolie to Gordon Brown...and now American Idol..to rally their support for Africa?

Perhaps I'm being ignorant about what is really going on in Africa...civil wars, genocides, famine, dictatorship, blood diamonds, AIDS..but how much longer should we champion our support for Africa?

Even if, after tomorrow, Idol were to succeed..largely due to the 'generosity' of the voters..or should I say those corporate bigshots..what portion of the donation will be allocated to Africa and the needy/poor/charities in America? Is this a one-off event? Will there be a fund where donations can be made post Idol 2007? Who will ensure that the money is well spent and given to those in real need?

But more importantly..will it ever be enough?

Do you think we should stop spoiling Africa and start treating it like an 'adult'?

Hmmm...that last bit might be a tough one...do we see Africa as a child in the first place?

As for tonight's Idol, as Simon rightfully put it..this week was the start of some real competition (*ducks from tomatoes from Sanjaya fans*) and as much as I hate admitting this, I fear that the safety nets which had been protecting the likes of Melinda, Blake and Lakisha are slowly losing their grips on these three...more so for Lakisha and Blake. Nosphileratu and Timberfake upped their games tonight and Jordin appears to be the possible favourite for winning this competition now.

Will there be an upset tomorrow..which I strongly suspect there will be..?
