Should We Care?

Yesterday morning BBC World news reported that Donatella Versace's daughter, Allegra,is being treated for anorexia. Similarly broadsheets and tabloids also included this report in their publications.

Just a few hours ago, I came across 'news' about Halle Berry's attempt to commiting suicide following the failure of her first marriage.

Next we'll probably have Britney or Lindsay or one of Olsen twins headlining the news with more of their mind-boggling yet irresponsible antics during the weekend...

..which leaves me to wonder "Should we even care?"

I'll admit I'm one of those people who religiously subscribes to publications such as Hello!, US Weekly, Entertainment Weekly, People etc etc and whilst I enjoy reading what celebrities (ranging from the A-listers to the C-listers or "wannabes" as I'd like to call them) get up to or are wearing.....but when it comes down to, say, another rehab episode for Lindsay Lohan and how she's supposedly 'happy and dating someone' then that's where I wish I could tell Lindsay to stop being an idiot or maybe for her to shut up already!!

But then who is to blame here? The publishers/reporters of these publications? The celebrities themselves? Or maybe their managers/agents/p.a's? Or could it be our own fascination with these shallow and pretentious world we all call 'celebrity world' as a means of escaping temporarily from reality?

On the other hand, it could be a good thing too. Remember when Kylie was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago? This prompted hundreds of women to get themselves screened for breast cancer. Now breast cancer (or even cancer) is not something we can just dismiss easily..and news of this kind should make us sit up and take notice...and no, I'm not being biased here just because I'm a Kylie fan.

Ok maybe I am slightly biased here because it's Kylie. But that's probably 'cause unlike celebrities such as Lindsay or Britney, people like Kylie and maybe to a certain extent, Allegra Versace do deserve to be noticed..understand what I'm trying to get at here? Britney, Lindsay, Nicole = naughty, wild, attention seekers... Kylie, Allegra = reserved, not always in our faces.

Not sure which category Halle Berry should be in though..

To sum it all up, I suppose there is no way I can ignore reading, hearing or watching news of all the Allegras, Halle Berrys, Kylies of this world ...unless of course I suddenly decide to become a hermit!! We will continue to be bombarded and to some extent be fascinated by them no matter how ridiculous or life-saving they can be..

Just putting in my two cents folks!
